Cadillac's change not wanted in Don Mills

Re: ''Brand new' Fairview Mall celebrates grand opening,' News, Nov. 14

It is indeed very exciting to see Fairview Mall being a brand new mall.

It is true, as Mr. Peter Sharpe, President and CEO of Cadillac Fairview Corporation said: "one thing you can always count on in retail is change." He continued to say: "Today, change is part of our daily lives....."

I would now like to refer to Cadillac's proposed "changes" for our medical building at 75 Donway West by converting it to senior residences. This is not a welcome "change" for Don Millers. This building serves over 20,000 patients. I would like to mention that in the neighbourhood of Don Mills there are more than eight senior residences.

Certainly, 75 Donway West needs some minor renovations. Should Cadillac Fairview make these improvements, then what would be the reason for the conversion from medical to senior residences?

The advantages of this medical building are that patients can navigate from one floor to the other without undue delays. Therefore, we can call it a concentrated medical building comprising of physicians, laboratory, ultrasound, X-rays, dentists and many other medical services. Cadillac Fairview still has time to change their minds before 2011.

A month ago I was on the telephone with a director of the company regarding the medical building. I was told that medical services can move to the new development which is in the process of being built. I pointed out that the new development's rent is much higher than "75". Our conversation continued and the director confirmed that my information was correct.

The question now remains regarding the "high rent" of the new developments which should be lowered so that the various medical services can be under one roof - Cadillac should attend to the minor repairs and leave our medical services at "75" as is with its valuable services.

How sad it would be for Don Millers to lose their health facilities.
