St. Michael's College senior high school football team couldn't have picked a better season to continue their winning ways.
That's because this year's Metro Bowl final - which they again qualified for, thanks to a 23-7 win over Newmarket's Huron Heights at Esther Shiner Stadium on Friday, Nov. 28 - is being held at the Rogers Centre.
It's set for this Wednesday, Dec. 3, 8 p.m., and will be one of five high school bowl games on tap that day representing all regions of Ontario, including the Golden Horseshoe, National Capital Region, Northern Ontario and Western Ontario.
The bowl games are sponsored by the 'Bills Toronto Series' which is presenting the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Dec. 7 against the Miami Dolphins. The high school bowl games will be played on the small NFL-style field.
St. Michael's, located on Bathurst Street at St. Clair Avenue, go into the final as the two-time Metro Bowl champs and winners of the last four out of six. A private school, they play in the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association
This Wednesday's Metro Bowl very nearly became an all-North Toronto final.
Northern Secondary, a perennial powerhouse in the city loop (which includes public and Catholic high schools), also made it to last Friday's Metro Bowl semifinals, but were edged 9-3 by Whitby's Donald Wilson, who now get the task of trying to stop the St. Mike's dynasty. Wednesday's bowl games will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.splitdraw.com and the Metro Bowl will be broadcast live by Rogers Cable.
As part of the NFL promotion of the event, two of the league's best ever quarterbacks - Dan Marino and Jim Kelly - will be on hand as part of the festivities, and are slated to guest on the broadcast.
