Resident demands York-South Weston politicians listen to the people

Re: 'Air-rail Link MPP responds,' Letters, Aug. 15.

It is clear that our elected officials representing York-South Weston still do not fully understand the residents' concerns regarding Blue 22.

A stop in Weston does not address all the issues nor will it "mollify" resident concerns as MPP Laura Albanese has previously stated in the media and her newsletter.

Let me clarify for all of our York-South Weston elected officials what the Blue 22 issues are as we see them: residents and businesses do not want to smell or hear 209, 55-year-old diesel-polluting trains running every 7.5 minutes for 20 hours per day through their communities (this includes all the other communities along the Georgetown corridor). We do not want to have our local streets closed and our communities divided.

With the significant increase in oil and gas prices since this project was first revealed almost four years ago, can we honestly expect the price will still be $20 per ride as SNC originally stated?

Who will board a train in Weston for $20 (if not more) per rider, per person?

Why is nobody pushing SNC Lavalin to use electric trains in this age of green technology?

None of our elected officials have addressed the fact that a number of schools and churches are within metres of the Blue 22 route.

Blue 22 should be made into an affordable transit line, with a number of stops along its route using modern and non-polluting technology without any street closures. It should be incorporated into the transportation plans for all of the GTA instead of a stand-alone, private, for-profit line.

Why should we be forced to accept a transit system that is already antiquated before it has been built?

We urge Ward 11 Councillor Frances Nunziata, Albanese and MP Alan Tonks to take a stand, listen to the real concerns and then fully address and respond to the residents regarding Blue 22 without bias. Enough is enough.
