Re: 'Gun plan laudable, but more pressing issues face Miller,' Editorial, May 30.
Two murders occurred in Toronto recently.
What I really want to know is what gun club the murderers belonged to, at which gun store did they buy the handguns and ammunition, did they have a firearms licenses, were the handguns registered, did they have an authorization to carry handguns, were the magazines pinned to the 10 rounds required by law?
I am positive the answers to the above questions are all negative, pardon the pun.
The criminals are criminals because they don't obey the laws - any laws.
Mayor David Miller, in his hysteria, is trying to enact more laws, under which there will be no legal gun ownership.
That is stupid, as the only people who would obey his new laws will be those who obey the current laws: who get a firearms license, go to a gun store, buy their guns legally, obtain authorizations to transport, take the guns home, lock them according to the storage regulations and go to the licensed gun clubs to shoot legally.
Those people, who extremely rarely kill someone according to data collected to Statistics Canada, will obey, but the criminals will still not. There is no way to legislate crime out of existence.
If the current mayor is simply unable to comprehend this simple truth, he is not fit for office. We need another mayor who will leave law-abiding people alone and concentrate on helping police to lock up the criminals.
If the criminals are in jail, they cannot commit crimes - that's the simple truth of fighting crime.
